When you read our blog, you might find yourself encountering some numbers that you don’t understand and us calling it the “color temperature.” When you are looking for LED lights to purchase, one of the biggest things you should look at it color temperature.

But what is color temperature? Let’s delve in:

Color temperature is “the temperature of a black body at which it emits the light of a specific spectral distribution used to specify the color of a light source.”

Makes sense? Probably not – that definition is even confusing to us.

Basically it means what color we see – much simpler.

LED lights and everything range from very warm to very cool.

For instance, INITIAL-LED’s lights range from Warm White (2700-2500k), Commercial White (5000-5500k), and Cool White (6000-6500k).

Those are just a few of the colors that LED lights can hit, and color changing LEDs can range almost anywhere on the spectrum.

Why does it matter?

If you aren’t converting all of your lighting at one time, color temperature matters so that you can match your lights. Even if you are replacing everything, you should know what is best for your office or company. For example, you might not want to use warm ambient lighting in your office, because it wouldn’t foster a productive environment.

What do we suggest?

For most of the projects that we see that are for offices or retail spaces, we recommend cool white lights. We also recommend cool white for retail spaces. For those who are using LED fixtures in their homes, we suggest warm white lights.

If you are unsure about what lighting to use or you want to learn more about the different color temperatures, that’s okay! Give us a call and talk to one of our customer service representatives to find out more today!

LED Lights Lead Fight Against Malaria

Researchers who have been trying to find a way to fight off the parasitic infection malaria have come up with a surprising solution: LED lighting.

Huffington Post reports that the disease, which is spread by female mosquitos, killed 584,000 people in 2014, mostly in the poor areas of Africa.

When scientists from the University of Southern California (USC), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Philips Research, based in the Netherlands, researched the travelling patterns of female mosquitos, they found that they were far less attracted to LED lighting than they were to other types of lights, including fluorescent and incandescent bulbs.

“For places in the world where glass windows and screens are uncommon, reducing insect attraction to indoor lights is a big deal,” Travis Longcore, lead author of the study and a professor at USC, told Fast Company.

They have been researching the technology for some time and have found that customized LED lighting can help people from all over the world ward off mosquitos, not just those in developing nations. Plus, they are better for the environment, which is a sticking point for most people in their crusades against mosquitos.

Of course, more mosquitos were attracted to LED lights than they were to complete darkness, but that is to be expected. Since the study and the introduction of LED lighting to the fight, the global amount of deaths from malaria have dropped nearly 47%, according to the World Health Organization. With more and more people switching to LEDS, that number will only get smaller, we can hope.

It seems like just as the weather is starting to turn, we hear the news reports and see the impact: insects carry many diseases that end up infecting our families and our pets. In our world, light bulbs act as beacons to the insects that come around our home – they attract the bugs and draw them straight into our homes and onto our decks. Bugs are attracted to specific lights, which we have already talked about in a previous blog.

A new study published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B finds that what matters most isn’t just how bright your bulb is, but what color wavelengths it gives off.

LED bulbs are designed to be more attractive to humans, and by sheer twist of fate, that means that they are also less attractive to bugs. Some bugs, like moths, are attracted to the cooler colors of light – blue and violet.

Research has found that the brighter your lights, the fewer bugs that you see. LED fixtures for outside, like our 30W Square LED Wallpack is brighter than traditional outdoor lighting, meaning it will attract about 20% fewer bugs.

“The research provides proof in concept that LED lamps can be customized to avoid specific areas of the spectrum that could have adverse environmental consequences, while still providing light for indoor use,” the study says. “For places in the world where glass windows and screens are uncommon, reducing insect attraction to indoor lights is a big deal.”

Fewer bugs = fewer diseases.

Bugs bring disease into your home and life through biting or stinging, but also just from touch. Bugs will walk on ANYTHING, and whatever is on their feet will eventually get into your system. This is especially important in more developing countries, where diseases like Malaria can kill up to a million people a year. LED is also attractive to those countries because it emits less heat.

If you have any questions about outdoor LED lighting or fixtures, please do not hesitate to leave us a message here. We will get back to you as soon as we can!

No matter how technologically developed we get, no matter how organized we think we are, and no matter how on top of things we think we are, we will always have problems with seeing and understanding just what is what in our warehouses. One of the biggest problems seems to be the shadows and dark spots that traditional lighting leaves. This is especially true in older warehouses that have extremely high ceilings and extremely weak lighting. However, technology has given us one improvement that many companies and industries haven’t taken complete advantage of: LED high bays.

An LED warehouse is something that many people dream about without even knowing it. These spaces use LED fixtures of all kinds, both inside and out. However, we know it isn’t always practical to switch over all of your lighting at once. While we can’t speak for every single warehouse, we do know that most companies should start on the inside and work their way out. The first LED replacements you should make are the high bays that light the entirety of your floor space. How many and how much lighting you need depends on the size and scope of your warehouse, but most spaces can start with our 300W LED high bay or the 150W LED bay fixture. These aren’t the strongest lights we offer, but they are great in warehouse spaces. If you have a bigger space, you will benefit from ordering more to amp up the lighting even more.

Switching from traditional lighting to LED lighting in your warehouse will mean a few things. One, your workers will be in a better mood because their eyes aren’t straining to see. Two, you will be able to have your workers do more, because they won’t be focusing on fixing broken light fixtures. Finally, your electricity bills will be smaller because LED high bays use less energy than other lighting sources.

If you are looking to make the switch over to LED lighting, there is no better place to start than by talking to one of our customer service reps. They will be able to educate you more about each one of our products and help you decide which one is best for your space.

Just recently, a park in Ohio was fit with Outdoor LED lights so that the park would not only be more beautiful, but also safer for all who want to visit. Pedestrian lighting will fill the walking areas, replacing older bulbs that never worked and constantly had to be replaced. Additionally, LED color lighting line trellises was added and it can change over time to reflect holidays or special events. The cost for lighting the area is less, and the result is astonishing.

Outdoor LED has been slowly, but surely, becoming the norm for all parks that are doing renovations. When someone comes to INITIAL-LED and asks us what we recommend for a park, the truth is that it really depends upon the park and the type of people who are going to use it.

One of the basic necessities for a public LED park is LED street lights. These lights are brighter and clearer than traditional streetlights. That means that people can stay at the park later than they typically do without fear. We suggest the 60W LED Street light, but some areas with less natural light might need more. These lights will help to eliminate shadows, which can help for those who want to take their dogs on a walk or allow their children to roam free.

Another suggestion that we typically make is to have some sort of barn light, like our 50W LED Barn Light. These lights can be attached to any structures that you have, making them perfect for pavilion or restroom areas, as those are areas where people may want to go when it gets darker.

If you are planning out a park, or you just want to make your backyard a little safer, consider our LED fixtures. Send us a message and we will be more than willing to talk to you about what will work best for your space.

When farmers and growers started to realize that their old lighting methods were eating their profits and using up their time, they decided to switch over to LED lights and they never looked back. Now, they have more time to research about what they are growing so that they can understand the methods better. When they were researching, they found that crops grown under LED grow lights actually have better nutritional content and taste better than other foods.

Plant development is a result of how the plant uses the stimuli it gets from the environment. Part of this is because of the nutrients in the water and in the soil. However, a lot of the nutrients come from the light that they use for photosynthesis. It is a technical study, and each plant needs different light. Growers need to understand the quantity, quality, and duration of light that each plant needs from grow lights. To some extent, that makes grow lights even more practical than growing crops out in a field.

LED growth is faster than traditional growth, because the plant gets everything that it needs. Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture performed a study that measured the growth of tomatoes under different lights. What they found is that the tomatoes grown under LED grow lights has twice the amount of vitamin C than those that were grown in a field. Another study found that mandarin oranges grown under LED grow lights had more antioxidants than those that were not. Other studies have suggested that LED lights eliminate free radicals. Finally, LED cultivation leads to larger and healthier crops.

Studies have also shown that, in tasting tests, foods grown under LED plant lamp have scored better for taste. Some state and county fairs are now even offering separate categories for these fruits and vegetables.

If you are looking for LED grow lights, the best options to start out with would be the 300W LED grow light or the 720W LED grow light.  However, INITIAL-LED does have more products that will work better with other crops. Contact us today (call or message) to learn more about what our LED grow lights have to offer.

LED Sculptures have been amazing crowds all over the world, from the Louvre in Paris to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. These installations have been abstract, concrete, and everything in between. We have seen artwork in museums, in buildings, and now we are seeing LED sculptures somewhere else: outdoors. The beautiful sculptures has been developed from using outdoor LED fixtures that stand up to the elements and last longer than traditional outdoor lights would. This makes maintenance less of a problem, as they don’t have to fly the artist out or get express permission just to replace a bulb on the piece.

LED sculptures can be found everywhere around the globe, but some of the most memorable and beautiful LED sculptures can be found outside of children’s hospitals in the United States, Canada, and Australia. These sculptures work to make the children inside the hospitals, and their families, believe that better health is in their futures. Entering a hospital can be quite emotional and scary for a child, so that hospitals wanted to make the last thing they see before entering the doors something that is kid-friendly and hopeful. One such LED sculpture is drawing international attention. The LED sculpture known as “Spirit” is outside of the University of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. The work was done by Matthew Placzek and uses solid-state lighting to help children achieve calm. The sculpture is 140 feet long and includes twelve kites that have stainless-steel frames and brightly-colored acrylic panels. At night, those kites light up with the outdoor LED bulbs from the ground. The piece also has children running, those too come to life under the lights. The light also uses some 5000 LED lights in the form of strip lights, which light the kites that can be seen from miles away. Many have commented that they have seen the lights from the sky.

“I wanted these pieces to come alive at night; the lighting provides a whole different look in the dark,” said Placzek in an interview. “The kites essentially float — you don’t see the tails — and because they’re all illuminated from within, they make a visually pleasing presentation.”

Summer means campfires, backyard barbecues, and late night swims. However, with summer and warmth also comes tons and tons of bugs that gather around lights, seeking warmth once the temperature drops. If only there was an ideal lighting solution that wouldn’t give off heat so that bugs don’t gather. There is! LED lights emit less heat and UV rays than traditional lighting does, and outdoor LEDs emit even less than the indoor ones. Less heat means fewer bugs. It also means that you aren’t spending tons of money on electricity – which is great for when you are already running pool pumps 24/7. Some lighting solutions work better than others when it comes to outdoor LED lighting, however.

LED wall packs are great because they go right on the side of your house and emit light out. Most of what you do outside at night is centered around that part of your home anyway. INITIAL-LED suggests using the 30W LED Wall pack or the 50W LED Wall Mounted Fixture, depending on what your needs are. Obviously the 50W light is brighter, which is better for bigger and deeper backyards. These lights are super easy to install and will give you light for seasons and seasons, meaning they will eliminate bug colonies from moving in, but they will also help you see during the snowy months when you have to walk outside early in the morning.

At INITIAL-LED, we love summer just as much as you do. We know how annoying bugs can be and want to provide you with outdoor LED fixtures that won’t just eliminate the bugs, but will also light up your nights so that you keep having fun even when the sun goes down. Write us a message and let us know which outdoor LED fixtures you would like for your projects.

Recently, Delta Air Lines fit their planes with LED lights. This helped with security and the style of the planes, bringing them into the next generation and improving their relationship with their clients. This investment will bring down maintenance costs which will hopefully bring down ticket costs for regular passengers. They went ahead and retrofit an entire line of planes with LED lighting, and have an option to fit 452 other planes with it as well. However, the airplanes having LED lighting have also caused many airports to try to make a move toward better lighting choices. LED airports will have better security, better lighting, and make for happier passengers when they have to wait between flights. But what are the best LED fixtures for an airport? We will discuss our choices:

In our opinion, the 400W LED floodlights are the best choice for lighting the large outdoor spaces that planes, passengers, and personnel have to navigate. Consider using this light to ensure the utmost safety of everyone, but also to make sure that every little thing gets where it needs to be. These lights cut through elements, ensuring that people who have to disembark grounded planes can get to safety quickly. The brightness will help everyone from the people working in the towers to tellers collecting tickets stay on track so that everyone stays on schedule. The 150W LED wall packs are great for right outside of your airport, and will help keep those waiting for taxis, cars, or any other kind of transport. You can direct the light right where you need it, illuminating doors and spaces that you regularly need. Our LED lights are extremely durable, lasting through anything that the weather has to offer. They also last longer than traditional lights, meaning less maintenance and replacement costs. Of course, they also save on your electricity bills and help make you more environmentally conscious.

When it comes to LED lights and fixtures, INITIAL-LED knows what you need and how you can get it. We will walk you through outfitting your airport, residence, business, or industrial space with LED fixtures. Our customer service representatives are here to assist you in any way they can, so don’t hesitate to leave a message below or give us a call.

For even better lighting, install LED downlights above to light from all angles and eliminate shadows.

LED Counters

Putting LED lights under your counters and along the fine lines in your space will give you a unique look while keeping everything classic and simple. LED counters create light that is soft and not as jarring as other lights, and it will actually make your space seem more home-like and not as industrial.

LED Offices

Using LED lights and strips within your offices is a great way to keep your employees happy and healthy. LED lights take away some of the harshness of traditional bulbs and will give better lighting from all angles. This will help keep these spaces clean, which can be a problem when we have employees that work at their desks. LED Offices is also the ideal lighting solution for business-owners that wish to save money while increasing lighting output.

LED Cafeteria

Using LED lights in your cafeteria, especially strip lights along the salad bars, dish returns, and within the kitchen, will make everyone healthier – from the people preparing the food to the people eating it.
